Charles Square
Just like the Wenceslas Square was formerly a horse market, today’s Charles Square was a cattle market. Founded by Charles IV, it was supposed to be the centre of Prague’s New Town, but this position went to the more famous Wenceslas Square. The Charles Square has great buildings, like the New Town Hall or the Emause Monastery, founded in 1347 by Charles IV, who wanted to revive the Old Slavic church tradition of Saints Cyril and Method. Its atypical architecture and the largest collection of medieval wall paintings outside Italy make it a must-see for every tourist. Since the 19th century, the Charles Square has served the purpose of a park. Today, this park is surrounded by busy streets, but its inner peace is still there, with a beautiful fountain, tall trees and statues of famous Czech writers, artists and politicians.
